English food has a bad reputation in many countries. This may be because English people prefer plain and simple dishes.
The traditional English breakfast is fried. It includes a fried egg, fried bacon, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, and sometimes fried bread.
The majority of working people eat sandwiches for lunch. These may be made at home or bought in a shop. Modern sandwich shops often have 20 or 30 different types of fillings and also 9 or 10 different types of bread or roll. Jacket or baked potatoes are another popular lunch, especially in winter. The potatoes are baked whole in the oven and a topping such as cheese, beans, chilli or curry is put on them.
For dinner, English people typically eat some kind of meat, potatoes, and 2 or 3 other vegetables. Puddings are also usually eaten. Fruit pies (apples, blackberry, cherry or rhubarb) with custard (a hot milk sauce) are many people's favourite.
English people do not eat out in restaurants as often as people in many other countries. However, "take-aways", for example Indian "take-aways", Chinese "take-aways" and of course fish and chips are popular. Take-aways are eaten at home and many people think that this is more relaxing than going to a restaurant.
We can also order snacks and meals in some pubs. This is usually simple home-cooked food. On Sundays a lot of pubs serve "roast beef" or other roasted meats, the traditional English Sunday lunch.
